Cited in this piece is a wonderful telling of America's Secret War in Laos by Dr. Nengher Vang. The piece was written for the larger collection, Beyond the Quagmire: New Interpretations of the Vietnam War. In Dr. Vang's words, he spent the "first four years of my life in the Lao jungle running from persecution by the communist Pathet Lao government and the next eight years of my life in two refugee camps in Thailand." Dr. Vang is one of my former professors and I am extremely grateful to have learned from him. His insights on the Hmong diaspora positively influenced my thoughts on Hmong culture.
